Type 1 Hex drill steel is readily available in 7/8" x 3 ¼", 7/8" x 4 ¼" and 1' x 4 ¼" shank sizes in 1-14 ft. lengths and is approximately 40% less than factory H-Thread.  The threads on your steel can be "bumped up" and re-forged into Type 1 at even more savings.

The Type 1 thread design is a bottom drive vs. the shoulder drive thread system of H-Thread.  The bottom drive Type 1 system is a better engineered, longer lasting, higher integrity drill string.  The newer shoulder drive H-Thread system was designed for a higher failure rate to guarantee higher bit and steel sales and profits.

H or D thread to Type 1 adapters are available.

These are some excellent quality American made bits, they just don't have a popular thread design.

IR #1 thread design steel, in the 3 shank sizes, is on the shelf and about 40% cheaper than new H. You can see pretty quick the savings if you use a lot of bits.

If you are drilling in real abrasive rock where bits get dull quick, you know that you can't make any money drilling with a dull bit and can't get in the footage. Dull bits are hard on your drifter or hammer and I'm sure you know what drifter parts cost. If you are drilling in reinforced concrete where you often hit re-bar and ruin a lot of bits, these are real cheap "throw-away" bits.  If you even go through a few bits, it would definitely be worth the small investment in some IR Type 1 threaded drill steel or an adapter.
